Project 01 - Developments & Rendering

SolidWorks

Blade

This is the model I made in Solid Works from my precedent image of a blade. I tried to make it as realistic as possible by just using the basics. All I did was to outline the image and extrude them evenly on either side. I really enjoy using this program as it has so much you can do with it.  As a base shape to iterate on I think that it will give allot of aesthetic flavour to my model with the jagged shape of it. In terms of my precedent words I think I should be able to bring them out in my iterations, if the effort is put in.

 The 81

 Natural

These are my iterations that I believe have a 'natural' feel. When creating these iterations I took into consideration my precedent image of the the caterpillar on the leaf. This was a reference as I tried to bring my object to life. I also looked at water as a natural element and how it flowed and shaped its way from one point to another, and tried to imagine what it might look like without the restrictions of gravity. This was my favourite word to play with, it gave so many beautiful models. Each one of them seems to have a certain elegance about them, they seem peaceful and at ease, I already have the idea of somehow using water with one of them in my final rendered image.

Blades

Using the noun 'blades' I was very restricted, or at least at first I thought it was. For the first few iterations based on blades I tried only slightly changing it from the original blade that it was. After a while I began to let go a bit and I began to experiment more, I tried to keep the iterations sharp if not obviously blade like. Some of the sharper iterations began to flow and look natural, so they all seem to merge into one.

Balance

From 'balance' I got more words such as 'symmetry' and 'structure'. I tried to create objects that were abstract but where the weight was evenly spread, either through symmetry or guess work. The symmetry really opened it up to getting some really interesting iterations with abstracted pattern type qualities

All Together

This is just the basic overview of all my 81 Iterations. From here i went into rendering and how I was going to lay out my 81 and making the big decision  of which model I was going to use as my final Iteration.

Rendering

Rendering 81                                  Rendering Final

I took these screenshots as I was going through looking at what colours to rendered my iterations. After playing around with greens and reds and greys and blues, I decided on using greens and greys as they to me represented nature and the blades respectively. I also tried out the transparency options when mucking around with the green, it gave some quite nice effects. (Below)

Rendered Example (Testing stage)

This is just an example of my trailing with rendering, this transparent glass green gives the iteration life like qualities which I portrayed in my Final Image

Rendered Final Development Process
(Not Final Pics)

This is my final Iteration rendered with simple red.

After deciding to go with green and grey I trialled out different combinations of the colours with varying transparencies. (same model as above but different view. below with possible background)

At this Point i had decided I liked the transparent green part and just playing around with shiny matt surfaces for the rest. (above and below)

It was at this point I decided on using metal in respect to the blade. However no matter how I set up the lighting or the angle of the render, I could not quite get the look I wanted. (below with background)

This is my Final Interation, All the above Developed to This. I was a definite toss up between this and the above render but i felt the last render was too black and I could seen to change that. This one also seemed more calm and elegant which I was trying to pull off. It was also here that I decided to get rid of the above background.

Project 01 - Precedent Words

Adjective:    Natural
Noun     :    Blades
Verb     :    Balance      'Natural' 'Blades' 'Balance'

My adjective is 'Natural'. when something is natural it has this sort of ease about it. when it sits in a place it looks like it could belong there, something that isn't man-made but something that is there of its own accord. I want to make a model that doesn't look so much like a product but something of beauty and nature, elegance and composure. I want the object to look like it could come alive.

I have chosen my noun to be 'Blades' as they are generally sharp and look cool, this could throw quite a cool element into the mix, plus this can also relate back to my precedent image of the blade.

For my verb I have 'Balance' as I think that it could really open up my work and make it almost realistic and much more aesthetically pleasing.balance can be taken in different ways and will not limit my work but I think it open it up to even more options.

Project 01 - Research & Precedent Images

Image One
I have chosen this as a precedent images has it is simply awesome, this fantasy blade has wicked curvature, yet a obvious sharpness to it. the 'Chaos Blade'  from PlayStation's God of War is iconic for those who have played the game. Its unique craft gives it an element of fantasy and unrealism that almost contradicts my precedent word 'natural'. It gives a sense of danger, fear and almost evil. As a starting point to work from I think this will make for some fun interactive learning, and some just as unique iterations.
(below: other blades I looked at)

Image Two
moving away from objects I went looking for something to give my iterations aesthetic, and to try and move away from just having a range of shapes. I sifted through a number of patterns this is the one that really stood out to me. Its so simple. The fact that its just a black and white pattern with the curves and grace that make it seem like so much more. Just looking at this I can see what looks like an elegant butterfly, yet it is just a pattern mirrored in perfect symmetry.
(Below: Other patterns I looked at)

Image Three
With one of my words being 'natural' I want something that I could look at as a reference, something with natural colours, and a natural delicacy. Google imaging 'Nature' it came up with various stereotypical nature, bright bright green crap, but this one stood out. A simple Caterpillar on a leaf, but when you look closely at the caterpillar, you see the ruggedness about it, the pincers on the back and the creepy antennae.
