Project 03 - Model 01 Developments

My first Idea for what I want to make is a object with complexity through curves that only a digital printer would be able to make. i want this object to act as a cage in respect to a smalled patterned object inside, probably a ball (sphere) that could move around inside without escaping.

Some original sketches

Some quick 3ds Max sketches

These are just me trying to find a way of creating an elegant spiral cage. as you can see the first few wern't so elgant as there wasn't much in the way of curve

Sketches developed - Im now looking at how I would place something inside an object and how I would contain a smaller object.

Project 03 - Precedents - Pattern

Pattern to me is a repetition of something. That something could be quite geometric or quite abstract, I dont think pattern has to be obvious, I think sometimes it is hidden and you have to looke close to see it.

I do like these more abstract type patterns but Id prefer to keep it geometric I think

Project 03 - Precedents - Maximizing Printer Use

To maximize the use of the the 3d printer I need to design something that cant just be made in the workshop. Two things that are hard to recreate by hand are spirals and nature (natural textures and patterns), so I looked into Spirals in Nature and came across some interesting stuff.

These two pictures I think are very inspiring, both have nice spirals and patterns that i think could work nice as a model at such a small scale.

The first picture below on the left has incredible texture  like lots of small bumps that I think is quite interesting. The picture of the hurricane on the right is a great example of a spiral in nature but possible hard to use in a model although the cloud textures are quite cool.

This picture I thought was quite funny, yet the spiral and texture of the horns are quite cool.

Project 03 - Research- examples of 3d printed design

In the first studio today I looked at different types of 3d printed arts and models and looked and how they sat, the kind of patterns that have been used and the movable joints that some have.

These ones all have different patterns usually using curves and shapes that aren't able to be man made.

These ones have different joining methods to create an object that moves.

This one is my favourite in terms of joining, I think something that spirals as it turns would be very effective.

Project 02 - Final Physical (Laser Cut) Model

This Image focuses on the very front of the model showing the coru pattern held within. I was trying to steer it away form the just capturing the object, but the detail.

Project 02 - Revised Digital Model

In this image ive used the angle to show the definition on composition and the transparent green material to try and show a sort of nature element.

Project 02 - Combo (Digital + Physical) Model

This just simply overlaying to show the relation.

Project 02 - Developments - More Sketch Models

looking back at my last project I again wanted to bring nature into it so I tried finding a subtle way of including some natural looking sort of coru curves in the middle.

this one I was just looking at balance and how it might be put together. I used wire to hold it together.

This two is pretty much the same as my first one and they are just looking at different sizes and how the holes for the wire might add detail to my design.

This one was more based on the curves and a natural pattern which in the the end end forms a blade like object. This one probably my favourite but I don't think it really relates back to my precedent model.

In my final design I want to include both the main shape of my precedent and somehow include some nature detail.
